Exchange database corruption creates uncomfortable situation in the business organizations because it halts the emailing process. Exchange database is the main constituent of MS Exchange Server as it holds mailbox data of various users.

Corruption issues are developed in Exchange databases due to under-mentioned factors:

  • Forced shutdown of computer

  • Crash of MS Exchange Server

  • Damaged LAN cable

  • Hardware failure

  • Hard disk bad sectors

  • Unintentional deletion of the user mailbox

You may get any one of the following error messages during EDB corruption issues:

  • The Database Files in this Storage are Inconsistent
  • Access Denied to database

  • Database page read failed verification because of a -1018 error
  • This database will be dismounted immediately

Microsoft offers a free tool Exmerge.exe for recovery of inaccessible EDB files. After downloading Exmerge zipped folder in your system, unzip the files in C:\Program Files\ExchSrvr\Bin folder. Don’t extract the files in other drive location as Exmerge utility use DLL files of MS Exchange Server. Before running Exmerge.exe, do the following steps:

  • Login as Exchange administrator

  • Copy and store EDB databases in a Windows BKF file

  • Dismount all EDB files from Exchange Server

  • Make extra space in your computer disk by deleting unnecessary files and folders

Exmerge utility offer two options of exchange mailbox migration:

  1. Extract and import (One step procedure)

  2. Extract or import (Two step procedure)

You must choose “Extract or import (Two step procedure)” that will extract exchange mailboxes from corrupt EDB files and export to .PST format. Exmerge tool store all migrated mailboxes in C:\Exmerge\Output folder by default. You can store output PST files in other drive path also. You shall also be able to recover email folders from virus infected EDB files with Exmerge tool. However, Exmerge.exe program is capped with various limitations as mentioned below:

  • It supports database recovery for specific Exchange Server versions only such as Exchange Server 2003, 5.5 and 2000

  • It fails to recover and convert exchange mailboxes of 2 GB or higher sizes

  • It require sufficient disk space for storage of recovered mailboxes

  • It consumes sufficient time in recovering EDB files

Exmerge.exe is an additional mailbox migration tool of Exchange Server like mailmsg.exe. It also allows importing of PST information into Exchange databases. However, Exmerge cannot retrieve email folders from highly corrupt EDB databases. It cannot also recover Exchange profiles that are removed from the Exchange Server by network administrator. Therefore, you should use third party software to recover inaccessible exchange mailboxes.

EDB file recovery is quite impressive and result oriented tool that allows administrator to recover user mailboxes from severely damaged EDB files. It is also capable of recovering permanently deleted exchange mailboxes. EDB file recovery software save all recovered exchange mailboxes either in .PST or .EDB file format. It support all MS Exchange and MS Outlook versions. EDB file recovery can also recover EDB files from the MS Backup folder.

Summary:

EDB corruption issues are generated by various factors such as unexpected shutdown of MS Exchange Server, Virus infection and others. Microsoft offer a free tool called Exmerge.exe to recover and convert EDB databases. It extract exchange mailboxes from corrupt database and save in PST format. However, Exmerge utility has some limitations such as it cannot recover EDB files of size greater than 2 GB. Therefore, you must use an external EDB file recovery tool to recover corrupt or deleted exchange mailboxes.
